Wyoming offers some of the most varied trout water in the Rockies, and the fishing changes dramatically with the calendar. Spring (March–May)

Early spring can produce excellent fishing on tailwaters and spring creeks before the snowmelt arrives. As temperatures climb, rivers fed by mountain snow begin to rise and cloud with runoff, typically peaking in late May or June. Freestone streams often become difficult to fish during peak runoff, while tailwaters below dams stay clearer and fishable. Blue-winged olive and midge hatches are common in this window.

Summer (June–August)

Once runoff drops and rivers clear, Wyoming enters its prime dry-fly season. This is when many anglers plan destination trips. Expect strong hatches — pale morning duns, caddis, and later the famous terrestrial fishing with hoppers and ants. High-country streams and mountain lakes come into their own as trails melt out. Summer is the busiest guiding season, so booking ahead is wise.

Fall (September–October)

Cooler weather brings some of the most rewarding fishing of the year. Brown trout become aggressive ahead of their spawn, and streamer fishing can be outstanding. Crowds thin out after Labor Day, and the scenery is hard to beat. Weather grows less predictable, so pack layers.

Winter (November–February)
